How to be savvy if you witness a car accident
April 21st, 2015 by Eli P
Witnessing a car accident doesn’t fall under anybody’s idea of fun, but it does offer the opportunity offer help to people in immediate need. If you can keep your wits about you, you may wind up being a hero, seeing justice done, or simply proving yourself a compassionate human being. In any case, being a savvy witness is a good idea.
- Put yourself in a safe place
If you see the accident while driving, the first thing you should do pull over to a safe, out of the way place. On foot, approach the scene cautiously, and be mindful of any impending hazards. - Call for backup
Depending on the severity of the accident, there may be serious injuries, and if so, every second counts. Call 911 to report the accident, letting the dispatcher know a precise location and any relevant information about the cars involved. - Check drivers and passengers for injuries
If you are able to safely approach the vehicles involved, try to make contact with the occupants. Bear in mind, they could be hurt, confused or unconscious. Try to remain calm and to help them do the same. Only if they are able to move under their own power, help lead them to a safe distance from the accident. - Identify what you’ve seen
Take note of the cars involved – license number, color, make and model – and go over everything you saw in your mind. Take photos or write it down if you need to, as your eye witness testimony may be important as things unfold. This hold especially true if you witness a hit and run – record the license number of the fleeing vehicle at least. - Do not voice your opinion until the police arrive
Emotions run high after any traumatic incident, and there’s no reason for you to help stir things up by stepping into the middle of it. Make it your purpose to help those in need, and when the police arrive to take over, you can offer your honest account of what you’ve seen.
