You’re in a Car Accident, Now What? A 10-Step Plan for Everyone

You’re in a Car Accident, Now What? A 10-Step Plan for EveryoneEven if you’re an ultra-careful driver, there’s a chance you’ll end up in a car accident. Statistically speaking, most drivers in the US will experience at least one road accident during their driving lifetime. If you’re involved in a behind-the-wheel blunder, there are some things you should do (and definitely NOT do) in order to ensure you’re treated as fairly as possible – as well as the other driver, too.
- Stay calm and take deep breaths. Getting angry will make the situation worse.
- Don’t leave the scene. Even if you think it’s no big deal, the worst thing you can do is drive away.
- Exchange information.
- Take pictures of any damage.
- If someone is injured, call the police.
- Don’t let your accident cause other accidents. Make sure your cars are completely off the road. If necessary, set up flares to warn approaching traffic.
- If possible, get information from witnesses.
- Contact your insurance company right away. If you delay, there could be issues with processing the insurance claim in a timely manner.
- Review the accident. Who was at fault? Why did it happen? Use the information from this accident to prevent the next one.
- Assess your auto damage. Is your car driveable? Whether it is or isn’t, call us and we’ll take care of dispatching a tow and scheduling repair needs
