The Safest Cars for 2016
December 10th, 2015 by Eli P
Thanks to new technologies, like front and rear video and emergency crash notification, today’s cars are not only more efficient, they’re also safer.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from automobile crashes, has named the following vehicles as their overall top safety picks for 2016.
- Ford Flex
- Ford F-150
- Chevrolet Sonic
- Toyota Prius
- Mazda6
- Nissan Murano
- Audi Q3
- Audit Q5
- Volkswagen Golf
- Volkswagen GTI
The IIHS rates hundreds of vehicles based on the level of protection they offer passengers during collisions and how efficiently their technologies work to avoid collisions and limit injuries. To achieve their ratings, IIHS tests a wide variety of safety features, including the moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side and roof strength, head restraints, and more. They also evaluate the technologies the vehicles use to avoid or mitigate crashes.
To become an IIHS top safety pick, a vehicle must earn a minimum of “Good” ratings in all the safety areas and a “Superior” or “Advanced” rating in front-end crash prevention.
Safety Ratings by Vehicle Category
One of the nation’s most comprehensive vehicle testing organizations, the IIHS rates cars for safety in the following categories:
- Minicars
- Small cars
- Midsize moderately priced cars
