5 Things You Should Routinely Check on Your Car
September 9th, 2015 by Eli P
When it comes to auto maintenance, a little time and effort can save a lot of money in the long run. To keep your car running smoothly and prevent more expensive repairs, check these five things on a regular basis.
1. Oil Level
This is one of the easiest and most important things to check on your car. Simply pull out the dipstick and wipe it off with an old rag or paper towel. Then reinsert the dipstick, pull it out again, and measure the oil level. If it’s low, add new oil and check for possible leaks. If the oil is black and gunky, it’s time for an oil change.
2. Tire Pressure
Over- or under-inflated tires will not handle properly, and can put you at risk on the road. They can also cause tires to wear out sooner, leading to premature replacement costs. Keep a tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment, and check the pressure every time you fill up the car with gas. When adding air to your tires, don’t exceed the manufacturer’s recommend PSI.
3. Tire Tread
Tires wear out so slowly it can sometimes be hard to notice. So it pays to do a visual check every few months, and more frequently with older tires. Look for signs of uneven tread wear, as this may indicate air pressure, alignment or other problems. Never wait until the tread is completely bare before replacing your tires.
4. Air Filter
Because it’s tucked away inside the engine, it can be easy to forget about the air filter. But this little part has a big impact on your engine’s performance. Have it checked every time you take your car in for an oil change. Or, you can easily inspect and change the filter yourself in only five to 10 minutes.
5. Nicks, scrapes and dings.
Even a small “owie” can lead to big damage if not repaired in a timely manner. Rain, snow, sludge and other conditions can cause exposed auto body parts to rust, leading to more expensive repairs.
Fix Auto USA recommends a visual check of the exterior of your car at least once a month. If your car has an “owie” or two, bring it in to us for fast, professional bodywork. We’ll even give you a friendly reminder to check your oil and your tires!
