5 Road Trips You Can’t Miss This Spring
April 8th, 2016 by Eli P
Ahh, springtime! That time of year when we can finally stick a fork in winter. When mild weather returns to the forecast, snow and sleet give way to rays and rain, and baseball season begins again (with hopefully more rays than rain). But there’s something else about spring, something that moves us away from the couch to behind the wheel.
We’re talking about road trips.
While summer seems to grab all the attention associated with road trips, spring usually gets overlooked. But why wait? The best time to embark on a cross-country trek (or even a few counties away) is right now.
Since Fix Auto’s network of collision repair centers extends all over the United States – and beyond – we thought it would be a good idea to offer up a handful of spring road trips. If you try one or all five, just remember – wherever the road takes you, a Fix Auto body shop is always within a short driving distance.
Without further ado, here are five road trips you can punch into your GPS today!
Skyline Drive
Winding though unspoiled Appalachia, Skyline Drive offers majestic mountain views, endless valley vistas and more than a few wildlife sights and sounds. But it’s what this spring break road trip doesn’t have –rampant commercialization and heavy traffic – that also make it a worthwhile destination. If you’re looking for a road trip that’s all about the road, Skyline Drive is for you.
Memorable road: Skyline Drive itself
Bodie, California
While everybody else is headed to San Francisco, LA, San Diego and other well-travelled locales, head off the beaten path to one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the United States. Located not far from the Nevada border, Bodie is like a time capsule to another era. The town includes many private residences, shops, saloons and even its own Chinatown.
Memorable road: Bodie’s unnamed access road. Bodie’s remote location is connected to California highways with a twisty, curvy, bumpy pathway of sorts, with unforgettable views.
Calabash, North Carolina
This idyllic seaside town has a can’t-miss Christmas and holiday store, plentiful sand dunes and some of the best seafood on the Eastern seaboard. In fact, local cooking methods inspired a regional cuisine that’s known far and wide for fresh taste, simple presentation and endless variety – Calabash seafood. If you go to Calabash, Wrightsville Beach (Wilmington, NC) and Myrtle Beach in South Carolina are also in the area, each about a 30-minute drive away.
Memorable road: Highway 17, right along the Atlantic coast.
Hudson Valley, New York
The Hudson River stretches through beautiful woodlands, original Dutch settlements (including Ichabod Crane’s old haunt, Sleepy Hollow) and the western side of Manhattan. Head to the Hudson Valley for an intriguing mix of rural relaxation and urban excitement.
Memorable road: George Washington Bridge, which spans the Hudson between Fort Lee, NJ, and Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
Kansas City, Missouri
Great BBQ joints, jazz music, wholesome heartland friendliness – Kansas City’s central U.S. location makes it an attractive pit stop (and extended stay location) for road trip enthusiasts. Plus, KC is located near a host of interstate highways – including I-29, I-35 and I-70 – making it one of the most accessible urban areas in the U.S. Don’t miss the Kansas City Zoom, Arabia Steamboat Museum and the River Market neighborhood.
