How to Properly Drive in the Rain in Southern California

How to Properly Drive in the Rain in Southern California

How to Properly Drive in the Rain in Southern California

Living in Southern California, most people rarely experience driving in the rain. The region’s sunny, relatively dry climate occasionally has periods of brief, intense rain. When this happens, the old cliché kicks in: when the heavens open up and dump down rain, native SoCal’ers are helpless behind the wheel. They’re often left stunned.

To properly drive in the rain around Los Angeles, San Diego, the Inland Empire and other Southern California areas, here are some pointers to stay safe on the road.

Go with the 5-second follow rule. Make sure you put at least 5 seconds between you and the car in front of you. It’s typically 2-3 seconds in normal weather, so those extra 2 seconds will help with safe braking, and keep you out of trouble.

Turn your headlights on. Keep this little rule in mind: if you have to use your windshield wipers, automatically turn your lights on. This not only helps you see better, but other drivers will notice you as well.

Avoid puddles & standing water, if possible. What appears like a 1-inch puddle can actually be much deeper. If you hit a half-foot deep water spot at 65 MPH, hydroplaning may result – with potentially deadly consequences, and will catch you off guard.

Go slower and allow extra time. If the speed limit is 50 MPH, don’t hesitate to go 40-45 – whatever speed feels comfortable for you. And the extra time will eliminate the need to rush. Slower = safer, and that’s an even more relevant equation in the rain.

Fix Auto, your complete auto collision center, can help get you back on the road if you are in an accident. With detail-oriented repair and a customer-first company culture, we’re ready to assist you in any way possible. Sudden thunderstorms are just one hazard to be aware of. Along with non-attentive drivers, road construction and other factors, most people end up in a fender-bender or two.

Call Fix Auto to get back on the road as quickly, safely and affordably as possible. Our collision repair specialists can be reached at 1-800-INFO-FIX.
