8 Safe Driving Tips You Need to Know
May 13th, 2015 by Eli P
Although the number of traffic accidents is down significantly from a few decades ago, people are still killed in automobile accidents every day. Utilize these driving tips to keep yourself safe on the road and to decrease the likelihood of being involved in a car accident.
- Don’t use your phone while driving this includes making phone calls, texting, surfing the web, and getting on social media. Avoid the urge to multitask and focus on driving safely and with no distractions.
- Do not, under any circumstances, drive if you’ve been drinking. Even if you’ve only had one drink, your response time and brain function is still impaired, and it’s not worth the risk.
- Don’t speed. Speeding as little as 10 mph over the legal limit can increase your risk of an accident by as much as 50%. Simply go the speed limit and plan for a few extra minutes to get you to your destination.
- Cut down on other distractions in the car. Eating, talking, putting on makeup, and messing with electronics can be quite distracting to a driver, and distracted driving leads to more car accidents.
- Avoid driving when you’re tired. This may seem like an impossible feat, but getting a good night’s sleep is more than just a good suggestion. Drowsy driving can lead to accidents, so you need to be as well-rested as possible before you drive, especially if you’re taking a long road trip.
- Wear your seat belt and require your passengers to wear theirs as well. In the case that you are involved in a car accident, having your seat belt on will give you a much better chance of survival and walking away with minimal injuries.
- Don’t follow other cars too closely. A large number of accidents could be avoided if drivers would leave more space between their car and the one in front of them.
- Be a defensive driver. No matter how safe you are on the road, you need to watch out for the cars around you. Be aware of your surroundings and assume that the other people on the road are terrible drivers—that way, you’ll be ready for anything.
