Guide on Using GPS in Car
August 27th, 2020 by Fix Auto USA
Why are we seeing so many drivers installing global positioning devices in their cars, when a phone app could easily get them to their destination?
GPS is becoming the preferred method of navigation for a couple of reasons. First, consider the desirable benefits, like easier navigation, quality service in areas that have no phone coverage, and freeing up your phone for when you need it. Another factor is that modern GPS devices are relatively easy to install, program, and operate. But before you install one, you need to know the best place to put GPS in car and, so you don’t get pulled over by the police, you need to know the legal position for GPS in car.
Best place to put GPS in car
Assuming you don’t have a built-in navigation system, where is the best place to put GPS in car? Most states allow drivers to mount a GPS device inside their car as long as it doesn’t get in the way of their ability to drive safely. The best place to put GPS in car would be on the left and lower side of your dashboard so it doesn’t obstruct your view. That’s not only the best position but it is also the legal position for GPS in car. Mounting it involves attaching a holder or suction cup to the surface.
GPS on windshield
We don’t recommend mounting your GPS on windshield, as it could block your ability to see the road. Besides, many states have made it illegal to use suction cup windshield mounts. Here is a list of the states where it is illegal to attach GPS on windshield:
- Alabama
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Georgia
- Idaho
- Illinois
- Louisiana
- Maine
- Montana
- Nebraska
- New Jersey
- New Mexico
- New York
- North Dakota
- Oklahoma
- Oregon
- Virginia
- Washington
- Washington, D.C.
- West Virginia
If the state in which you live does not allow windshield mounts, you can purchase an inexpensive dashboard mount or console mount for your phone or GPS. In California and the following states, it is legal to mount your GPS system onto your windshield but only at the very bottom of it:
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- Hawaii
- Indiana
- Maryland
- Minnesota
- Utah
- Vermont
- Wyoming
Is it illegal to use phone as GPS while driving?
Most states have laws forbidding use of handheld devices while driving, which means you could be pulled over for merely touching your phone while driving. However, in many states, drivers can use their smartphones as a GPS if they insert it in a cradle that is mounted to the dashboard, as long as it doesn’t interfere with their ability to drive and see the road ahead. Still, if you need to change a route, first you must pull over and turn off your car. That’s the law pretty much everywhere you go.
Now that you know the best place to put GPS in car, you are ready to go. But before installing one, check with the DMV or local authorities so you can confirm firsthand the state and local policy on GPS in your car.
Remember, being easily distracted and inattentive is one of the leading causes of auto collisions in America. If you use a GPS device inside your car, please be extra cautious and abide by the laws of your state.
